Carry on what you require for the day. Shopping is an excellent way to pass time in Asia and this is all the more reason for you to pack light. You can quite simply find everything that you need for a much cheaper price and you can fill your suitcase three times over when you travel back.

And yes, they do have toilet paper. Recently, I met a traveler from Peru who had brought an entire suitcase full of toilet paper with her. Apparently someone had misguided her saying that toilet paper does not exist in India.

Believe it or not, you will not fall sick by eating food in India. Most of the good restaurants are clean and healthy and in any case Indian food contains spices which make it a natural anti-biotic. As long as you avoid street food vendors from shady places, you will be quite safe.

Another misconception about India is that most people don’t speak English. That is far from the truth and as a matter of fact, Indians are amongst the most fluent English speakers in the entire continent. Even the local taxi drivers and tuktuk drivers speak passable English. Travelling in India is quite cheap and there are several comfortable modes of Inland travel such as trains and buses.

Yes, air conditioned coaches do exist. While certain parts of the country and some cities are still closed off and old fashioned, majority of the population is quite forward thinking. People are welcoming and friendly even. As long as you avoid the touts you should be fine.

• Firstly, stand on one side of the road and make sure that you are standing at a safe distance from the moving traffic.

• Thirdly, make yourself visible. Although cab drivers are out on the road for doing business and they will trace you themselves yet, you should do something on your part to make yourself visible. You can make hand gestures by waving out in the direction of moving traffic.
